The Value of FOP and Legal Defense

Brothers and Sisters, take a moment to read the following account from Brother Zysman on his experience with the FOP Legal Defense Plan.

"On April 4th, 2023, I went to work like any other day. Around 10am my partner and I were conducting cell compliance checks when an Offender became non complaint and aggressive. While trying to get control of the Offender he refused multiple orders and turned on myself several times, subsequently resulting in a spontaneous use of force.

Since that day I have been on Administrative leave. Thankfully, I have had unlimited support from our newly voted union, FOP. From the attorneys, our President, and our reps I have not been alone.

I am facing termination from state service. Our plan attorneys work countless hours fighting for us. I have had a criminal attorney and an administrative attorney fighting for me and never leaving me out of the loop. They are always quick to take my calls and answer any questions which gives me the confidence I have need to keep pushing.

Some of you may not realize that due to our jobs some decisions you make, right, wrong, or indifferent, can get you into criminal complaints. In this situation the state sent my use of force to the Attorney General's Office for possible charges. I therefore needed two different attorneys to represent me and I haven’t paid a dime over my union dues.

Having FOP is crucial in many ways, one is helping you fight for your rights so that you can continue to support your loved ones.   Also in my experience the attorneys I have dealt with have many years of experience and have amazing track records of winning. Our attorneys deal with law enforcement related issues daily and not just with the NDOC. Additionally, just look at what they’ve done for us in their first 6 months representing the bargaining unit! From the largest raise in NDOC history to the protections written into the contract, they have exceeded anyone’s reasonable expectations. Finally with the cost of attorneys, it is not cheap to hire a private attorney with most charging $400.00 an hour or more! Our dues are much less but the representation is not.

I couldn’t be any happier with FOP and I thank them for all their hard work."
